What is Locomotor Movement? Locomotor movement is the process of moving your body in a manner that enables you to move from one place to another. This includes all the movements that you make while walking, running, jumping, and even crawling. The purpose of locomotor movement is to enable you to reach your destination as quickly as possible.

A locomotor movement is one that is made for the purpose of moving the body through space. In simple terms, locomotor movement refers to the type of movement that your body can make. The way that your body can move is actually quite varied. Each person has different ways of moving.


Walking is a movement that is made for the purpose of moving the body along an axis of motion. Walking is a very simple movement. It is something almost everyone does on a daily basis. The act of walking itself is controlled completely by the parts of the brain which control balance.

The way that you walk and the way that your feet move around the floor is controlled by your balance.

Balance is a little bit complex. Most people are aware that they have to balance themselves when they walk. However, the balance that is used to control walking is actually different to the balance that is used to control standing.

There are three types of walking.

1. Bipedal walking

Bipedal walking is a movement that allows people to walk on both of their feet. This type of walking is most common in animals and people.

2. Sciatic walking

Sciatic walking is a movement that is made for the purpose of moving the body through space without use of the legs. This type of walking is most common in people who have damaged nerves in their spine.

3. Gait

Gait is a movement that is made for the purpose of moving the body through space. This type of walking is most common in people.

Locomotor by muscular power

Locomotor by muscular power is a movement that is made for the purpose of moving the body through space. This type of movement requires the use of muscular power.

There are 3 main reasons why people walk.

  • For recreational purposes
  • For transportation
  • For sport

Many people walk as a form of exercise. Walking as a form of exercise is common for several reasons.

  • Walking is inexpensive
  • No intensive training is required
  • Walking is easy to learn

Walking is a common form of transportation in areas that do not have good public transport.

Walking is inexpensive. The amount of time that people walk in a given period of time is not recorded. Many people will walk around 4 miles a day without giving it a second thought. However, if you actually count the number of steps taken in a day then you will find that most people will take in the region of 10,000 steps a day.

Movement and the Brain

When we think about movement, we usually think about walking, running, or any other movement that requires a muscle group. When we think about movement in a physical therapy sense we usually think about movement created by muscles. However, an imbalance between muscles, nerves, and bones can cause problems with your movement.

When we think about movement in a clinical sense, we usually think about movement created by muscle stimulation. For example, you might use therapy devices such as a vibrating pad or massage ball to stimulate your muscles in an attempt to improve them and reduce your problems.

At the physical therapy clinic, however, you might not think as much about movement created by the brain. However, if you spend a little time thinking about what movement you experience on a daily basis, you may realize that the movement of your brain can have a big influence on your life.

Movement that is controlled by the brain

The brain controls movement in two ways.

  1. Firstly, movement is created by the central nervous system. The central nervous system is made up of nerves and receptors which connect to the spinal cord and the brain. These nerves send messages to your brain about your muscles. The brain then decides which muscles to use and where they are used.
  2. Secondly, movement is controlled and created by the brain. The brain is responsible for creating feedback loops with the muscles and the body. These feedback loops allow the brain to control the movement of your muscles.

The main way in which the brain controls movement is through movement memory. The brain learns to move by associating movements with rewards and punishments. The sensations caused by movement of muscles and joints are interpreted by the brain and interpreted by your spinal cord and muscles.

How movement memory works

The brain uses these sensations to create movement patterns. These movement patterns are used by the brain to identify postures and movements. For example, when a child reaches for a push toy, the brain may associate the movement with reward of getting the toy. The movement of reaching for the toy will be similar every time the child reaches for it.

If the child falls and hurts themselves, the brain may associate a punishment with the movement. Your child may then find it hard to reach the toy again.

How the brain creates movement

The brain can only identify movement patterns to a certain degree. The movements we associate with a reward or punishment is only up to a certain point. For example, walking may be associated more with reward than pain or running may be associated more with pain than reward.

The brain uses movement memory to create movement patterns. Movement patterns are used by the brain to identify the movements required to complete different tasks. For example, if your brain identifies a movement pattern of reaching for the toy, it will be able to use the movement when you are trying to move an object.

How movement affects your body

The brain uses movement to control your body. For example, when you reach for the toy, your brain uses movement to move the muscles and joints in the correct order. Your spinal cord then sends instructions to your body to move your body in the correct order.

Movement affects your body in numerous ways.

Movement allows your body to move in different ways. For example, if you move your arm, you may be moving your shoulder, your arm, your arm bone, your elbow, your forearm, your wrist, and so on.


Most people are aware of their body being involved in the movements that they carry out. However, many people do not realise that the balance that is involved in these types of movements is not controlled by their body.

Your brain is responsible for controlling your balance. If you pay attention, you will notice that when you are standing, it is very difficult to move your body in any direction. Your brain is in control of stopping you from falling.

This control is called your equilibrium. The equilibrium that you control is completely separate to that which is used to control walking.

This means that when you are walking, your body is completely in control of the position of your feet, the movements of your legs and the movement of your hips. However, when you are standing, your body does not control any of this.

It is your brain which controls your balance. If you are paying attention to your balance, you may notice that your brain is not controlling it very well.

The main cause of this disorientation is the lack of sensation in your feet. When you stand, you are not actually feeling the ground under your feet. You only have sensation in a small percentage of your feet. The rest of your feet are numb.
